Fall scene near the small town of Chelsea in central Vermont.

Central Vermont is sparsely populated and very hilly.

Just below Applebutter Inn near Woodstock, Vermont. This Bed & Breakfast had outstanding breakfasts and a home-like atmosphere.

Stuffed cows grazing on the road to Woodstock.

No words can adequately describe this.

Quechee Gorge east of Woodstock.

Misty morning in western New Hampshire.

Little Squam lake in the Lake Winnipesaukee area (in central New Hampshire).

The 1981 movie "On Golden Pond" was filmed nearby on the shores of the much larger Squam Lake.

Homes on Little Squam Lake.

Another great view on an overcast day. We stayed that night at a pleasant little B&B in Meredith, near Lake Winnipesaukee, the Tuckernuck Inn.

Along a scenic farm road to the village of Wonalancet, just south of the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Creek behind the small church.

Colorful hiking trail into the forest along farm road 113a.

Covered bridge along the Kancamagus Highway.

The Kancamagus Highway is a spectacular route through the southern White Mountains, even in the rain.

River along the Kancamagus Highway offers many photo ops.

South of Conway, New Hampshire.

Near Effingham, New Hampshire, off Highway 25, just west of the Maine border.

Looking across the Ossipee River.

View down the Ossipee River just before it reaches the Maine border.

Brilliant colors on a rainy day.

View from just south of Evans Notch along Highway 113 in far western Maine.

Near the New Hampshire-Maine border.

Aspens catching late afternoon sunshine.

We came across this scene after we got on the road to Freedom (a village in extreme eastern New Hampshire).

Early morning near the town of Cornish in western Maine.

Luxurious Rockmere Lodge in Ogunquit, Maine. Spectacular location offers cliffside walk into nearby Perkins Cove. It includes breakfast, but it's worth skipping to go to Amore Breakfast (that's the name of the cafe) on nearby Shore Road.

Cape Porpoise, Maine, where we stopped for a lobster lunch. During our four days in Maine we had whole lobster, lobster rolls, lobster pizza and lobster ravioli.

Along the highway to Kennebunkport.

Coastal Maine offers a unique combination of fall color and scenic coves and harbors.
